Yoga is More Than a Form of Fitness
Yoga is much more than just another form of fitness.
The word yoga means to “yoke” or to “unite”. Yoga aims to sync the mind and the body. It aims to calm our chaotic thoughts about the past or the future and helps us to focus on the now.
This is accomplished through three main components of yoga: breathing, postures, and meditation.
Meditation has been a huge part of my healing from my traumas. I often found my mind stuck in the painful memories of the past or stuck in the fear of the future which left me blind to the beauty of the present. It took me quite some time to realize that this way of thinking was severely compromising the potential of my present life.
Through meditation, I was able to accept that I couldn’t change the past and that I couldn’t determine the future. Through meditation, I realized that although I couldn’t change the things that had happened in my past and couldn’t control everything that was to happen in my future I could control how I let them affect my NOW.
Which brings me to the New Year.
I am a firm believer that we should aim to see every day as an opportunity to start again and become the people we want to be. However, it’s understandable that the concept of the New Year evokes a sense of hope and a new beginning for many of us. With that being said have you taken the time to self reflect before the new year begins?
Take a look back at this year. What worked for you and what didn’t? What habits do you need to break or develop? What are some things you’d like to focus more on this coming year? What are some things you’d like to improve? Are there any goals you would like to accomplish?
Assess what could potentially stop you from accomplishing these goals.
Eliminate all that could hold you back this year to come. Whether it be a single person, self-doubt or fear.
Allow yourself 5-10 minutes to just sit in silence and ponder on what you need to let go of. Envision it floating away from you and let it drift far away and move forward IN THE NOW!
Free yourself from what is weighing you down so you can soar in 2019.
